JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

All north bound lanes of Interstate 95 near Old St. Augustine Road are closed due to a fatal crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident involving three semi-trucks and two passenger vehicles happened around 3:30 a.m. on Monday in a construction zone.

According to FHP, one semi-truck hit a metal piece of debris in the road, which disabled the driver's brakes, and the semi-truck coasted to a stop.  A second semi-truck tried to avoid the debris, made an improper lane change, hit a car and jackknifed.

An SUV then slid underneath the trailer of the semi-truck.  A third semi-truck was behind the SUV but was able to drive through the accident.  FHP says the third semi-truck was involved only because the driver was able to go around the jackknifed semi-truck.

The driver of the SUV died. Two other people were transported to an area hospital.

FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan says the Florida Department of Transportation received reports of the debris in the road, but by the time they arrived on scene to remove it, the accident had already occurred.

FHP requested a St. Johns County Sheriff's Office helicopter to take photos from the air of the scene.

FHP says it could be before 11:00 a.m. before the north bound lanes of I-95 are reopened. Traffic is being detoured on County Road 210. Drivers traveling north can expect heavy delays.
