Clean-up crews are done removing contaminated soil from a
site near Healy where more than 1,900 gallons of aviation fuel spilled last
month.
A Big State Logistics tanker-trailer spilled the fuel after
an April 21 accident at 271 Mile Parks Highway, about 20 miles north of Healy.
The front tanker was damaged when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over,
causing the spill.
The driver, Robert Myers Jr., 31, of Fairbanks, was issued a
citation for negligent driving.
The subsequent clean-up effort resulted in about 300 cubic
yards of material being removed from the site, which is in a right-of-way
adjacent to state land, according to a final report from the Alaska Department
of Environmental Conservation. The contaminated soil was taken to a Moose Creek
facility for incineration.
About 250 gallons of fluids was recovered with absorbent
pads and boom immediately after the spill, according to the report, with about
900 gallons more pumped from a nearby ditch.
The report states that Big State Logistics is also working
with DOT to return the affected area to its original condition, which will
include backfilling, grading and reseeding the spill site.
The spilled fuel also cause structural damage to the asphalt
roadway, the report stated. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public
Facilities has requested replacement of the affected stretch of roadway.
There were no reports of affected wildlife or damage to
utilities in the area.

State officials say about 2,000
gallons of fuel spilled on the Parks Highway north of Healy Tuesday morning,
during a tanker tractor-trailer crash that has closed one lane of the highway.
Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation spokeswoman Ashley Adamczak said DEC was notified of the Big State Logistics semi’s crash, at Mile 271.4 of the Parks, shortly after 2:30 a.m.
“We received notification that a Big State Logistics tanker truck had left the roadway and was leaking fuel onto the roadway,” Adamczak said.

According to an Alaska State
Troopers dispatch on the crash, troopers were informed that the double
tanker-trailer, driven by 31-year-old Robert Myers Jr., had crashed off the
highway. Myers was cited for negligent driving, after troopers and members of
the Tri-Valley Fire Department initially responded to the sene.
"Myers had been driving a 2011
Freightliner tractor northbound on the Parks Highway when he lost control of
the vehicle," troopers wrote. "The vehicle entered the ditch on the
northbound side of the highway and rolled. Myers was uninjured."
Adamczak said recovery crews were at
the scene, and were working to pump remaining fuel from the tanker.
“Standing fuel was in the ditch next to the road, and they were able to recover the product,” Adamczak said.
Additional fuel had spilled on one lane, with traffic control being conducted to let vehicles pass the crash site.
“People should expect delays,” Adamczak said.
