MAY 25, 2015

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

Albuquerque police say a man and a 12-year-old boy are dead and three other boys are injured after the cherry picker they were in was thrown by a gust of wind.

Police were called around 1:45 p.m. Sunday about a report of an equipment failure and several children injured, according to a report by KOB-TV in Albuquerque.

Police spokesman Simon Drobik says in a news release issued Sunday night that the man and the boys were in the basket of the cherry picker.

He says it wasn't secured to the ground and a witness reported that wind toppled it and all five were thrown from the lift.

Drobik says the man died at the scene and the boy at the hospital.

He says boys ages 10 and 7 are hospitalized in critical condition, while another 10-year-old boy is stable.

Double boom fatality in Albuquerque

MAY 25, 2015

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

A man and a teenager died yesterday and three children seriously injured after the boom lift they were taking a ride in overturned in Albuquerque, New Mexico- USA.
The man took the four young people up in the boom lift while it was sitting on the back of a delivery truck/trailer. He telescoped the boom to near full height, and according to local police reports, a gust of wind brought the machine crashing down. In reality the fact that the lift was sitting a trailer and that it was almost certainly overloaded are more likely to have been the cause of the overturn.

A witness said the man attempted to protect the children as the platform went over, by putting himself in front of them.
