The Maryland Department of Corrections says a contract
worker from General Electric was electrocuted and another worker was injured
Thursday at the power plant located on the grounds of Eastern Correctional
Institution in Revells Neck Road, Westover, Maryland 21890.
There is no word yet on identities of either worker. The
injured worker was taken to Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury, but is
expected to be released.
The incident happened at approximately 10 a.m. at the ECI
co-generation power plant. The contractors were working on an electrical
control upgrade at the facility. The co-generation plant is operated by
Maryland Environmental Service and supplies electricity to ECI, the state's
largest prison, and to the nearby Somerset County Detention Center.
There was no significant interruption of power to the
prison, which houses more than 3,200 inmates, and the incident did not have an
impact on overall prison operations. No MES or ECI staff were injured, and no
inmates or correctional staff were in the area at the time of the incident.
ECI is a medium-security prison that houses more than 3,200
inmates. It opened in Somerset County in 1987 and is Maryland's largest prison.
