APRIL 1, 2015

Viewers sent News 9 dozens of photos Tuesday showing the hail produced by late-night storms passing through parts of the state.

Huge hail was widespread in the state, but among the biggest reports were in Meeker, Oklahoma. In fact, a viewer shared a photo of hail being compared to a baseball and a cell phone.

Damaging winds were confirmed with this storm, surpassing 80 miles per hour in the metro.

Another viewer shared a photo of window damage from the hail produced near Centerview, Oklahoma Tuesday night.

Just before midnight, OG&E reported more than 12,000 customers were without power in the metro area.

Wind also took down trees in the metro late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. A downed tree could be seen in N.W. 10th Street and Western Avenue.

Severe thunderstorms battered parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas with very large hail on Tuesday evening. Some of the stones that fell from these storms were at least the size of a baseball.

You can see hail rings clearly in the lower left photo below. Hail is formed by accumulating layers upon layers of ice as the storm’s updraft prevents the stone from falling until it’s heavy enough to break through the updraft. Very large hail stones is a sign of a very strong updraft, which was able to keep the stones airborne for a long time.

Tuesday’s hail storms damaged homes and cars as they tracked across the Central Plains. Windshields were smashed in, and siding was ripped off in places where the hail came down sideways and battered homes.

The largest hail stone on record fell in Vivian, S.D., on July 23, 2010. It was eight inches in diameter, and 18.5 inches in circumference. “Mr. Lee Scott, who collected, the monster stone originally planned to make daiquiris out of the hailstone,” writes Weather Underground’s historian Christopher C. Burt, “but fortunately thought better and placed it in a freezer before turning it over to the National Weather Service for certification.”
