HOMESTEAD, FLORIDA (CBSMiami) – Two people were hurt in a
restaurant explosion and fire in Homestead.
It happened at the La Fondita restaurant at 219 SW 6th
Avenue, Homestead, FL 33030.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Michelle Fayed said when
the owner of the restaurant and another relative arrived at the restaurant
Friday morning to get the business ready for opening when they smelled gas.
When they turned on the lights there was an explosion which started a fire.
The owner’s daughter said her father, Alfredo Derrano, and
her sister-in-law, Odelia Mondragon, were injured.
Both were airlifted to Kendall Regional Hospital with second
degree burns, according to Fayed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is clear
that it was caused by the gas explosion.
The question is what caused the gas leak, perhaps somebody let the oven gas
on, gas pipe broke or leaked, and so on.
When you smell gas, immediately get out and call 911. Do not open any lights and do anything else as this can spark an explosion or fire.
