TRAIN OF FAILURES: SECOND TRAIN DERAILS IN WELD COUNTY IN TWO DAYS

MARCH 24, 2015

WELD COUNTY, COLORADO

Three Union Pacific cars derailed in Weld County on Monday night, the second train derailment in the county in two days.

The derailment happened at U.S. 85 and Weld County Road 394 between Evans and La Salle just before 9 p.m. There were no injuries, Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said.

Crews worked overnight to clean up the mess and make repairs. The line was reopened at 7:30 a.m. Two of the cars were on their side and 200 feet of track were damaged, Davis said.

Investigators have not said what caused the derailment. Davis said two of the three cars were carrying fertilizer pellets and the third car was empty. There were 31 cars in total.

On Sunday, a train derailed near Hudson in southeast Weld County. In all, 30 cars carrying coal were involved, with 20 of the cars going off the tracks. It’s not known what caused Sunday’s derailment.
