COLUMBUS, OHIO

All westbound lanes on I-70 on the East Side have been reopened after a fertilizer spill from a tractor-trailer forced a morning shutdown.

Columbus police responded at 8:50 a.m. to the spill near the Livingston Avenue exit, a dispatcher said.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said the green substance on the road is fertilizer.

I-70 was shut down on Tuesday morning due to a fertilizer spill.

Columbus Police and Fire crews were first called to a report of a spilled substance on I-70. The mysterious green powder was spotted near the Miller Kelton exit in the west bound lanes. It covered around a mile.

At first, it was not immediately what the substance was. The highway was closed for investigation and clean-up.

One 10TV viewer described it as looking like “green salt.”

Finally, officials determined that it was non-hazardous lawn fertilizer. But the clean-up would take into the afternoon.

The substance came from a truck passing through the area. The driver was tracked down and cited by police.

The road was reopened around 1 p.m.
