ICY ROADS AND SPEEDING/CARELESS DRIVING CAUSED MULTIPLE MORNING COMMUTE ROLLOVERS IN NEW YORK

MARCH 16, 2015

MOUNT KISCO, NEW YORK

A five-car accident apparently caused by black ice and speeding/careless driving for the traffic conditions, snarled the Monday morning commute on the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway.

A morning with patches of black ice on the roads also saw a multi-car crash on the Palisades Interstate Parkway and a school bus rollover on Route 202 in Somers.

No one was injured, but two cars went over the guide rail and ended up in the woods off the parkway during the accident shortly after 6 a.m. at Exit 34, South Croton Avenue, Westchester County police said.

The crash closed the parkway for about an hour. Two cars were towed from the scene about 7 a.m. and one of the two lanes was reopened about 7:15 a.m. The two cars in the woods off the parkway were towed after the morning rush and the parkway was completely reopened about 9 a.m., police said.

Other traffic problems Monday morning:

Route 9A: car rolled over near Jack Road about 5 a.m. in Peekskill. The Continental Village Fire Department and the Peekskill Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded. First Assistant Fire Chief Chris Rimm said firefighters found the car upside down in the center of the road with one person trapped inside.

The driver and passenger doors were removed so the patient could be removed. The scene was cleared around 6 a.m.

The Palisades Interstate Parkway also saw a multi-vehicle accident, in which one car rolled onto its side. It occurred shortly after 6 a.m. southbound north of Exit 11, New Hempstead Road in Ramapo. It was cleared around 8 a.m.

Route 202: Three people, including one student, suffered minor injuries when a school bus flipped over onto a car, closing Route 202 in Somers.
