I-285E IN GEORGIA REOPENS AFTER DEADLY CRASH RECONSTRUCTION

MARCH 8, 2015

SANDY SPRINGS, GEORGIA

Sandy Springs police shut down Interstate 285 eastbound for hours Sunday morning for a crash investigation.

Police closed the interstate at exit 22, New Northside Drive and Powers Ferry Road, starting at 8 a.m. Sunday. All lanes reopened just before 11 a.m.

Police were reconstructing a fatal crash that happened in early February. Jarvis Cohen, 28, was hit and killed by a car when he got out of his own car after being involved in a crash.

Police detoured all drivers onto the exit and then back onto the interstate on the other side of exit 22.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said drivers should expect significant delays and were encouraged to avoid the area.

DRIVER GOT OUT OF HIS CAR AFTER BEING INVOLVED IN A CRASH NEAR THE POWERS FERRY EXIT, I-285, GEORGIA.  AS HE TRIED TO CROSS THE INTERSTATE, HE WAS HIT AND KILLED BY ANOTHER CAR.

FULTON COUNTY, GEORGIA

Police have identified a man hit and killed on I-285 Friday morning.

Police say Jarvis Eddie Paul Cohen, 28, got out of his car after being involved in a crash near the Powers Ferry exit. As Cohen tried to cross the interstate, he was hit and killed by another car.

Triple Team Traffic’s Mark Arum first reported the accident on Channel 2 Action News This Morning as authorities blocked the lanes to investigate the crash around 5 a.m.

Sandy Springs police say a BMW X5 SUV traveling eastbound on I-285 was struck from behind by Cohen's car, a Chevrolet Tahoe. Cohen's Tahoe then struck the median wall. The driver of the BMW stopped in the right emergency lane. That's when Cohen got out an attempted to cross the interstate.

The driver of the car that hit Cohen stayed at the crash site. That driver is not being charged at this time.

The crash happened just weeks after another fatal pedestrian crash that tied up traffic on the northside perimeter in January.

The Georgia DOT is urging drivers to stay in their cars if they are involved in a crash on the interstate.
