FEMALE DRIVER DIES IN FIERY CRASH NEAR ROCKPORT, WASHINGTON

MARCH 9, 2015

ROCKPORT, WASHINGTON

A woman is dead after a fiery vehicle accident Monday afternoon near the Skagit and Snohomish county line, about 10 miles south of Rockport, Trooper Mark Francis with the State Patrol said.

The accident happened between 3 and 3:30 p.m. when a vehicle, later identified as a black 1985 Nissan pickup truck, was heading west on Highway 530 when it travelled onto the right shoulder at about milepost 57, according to a State Patrol accident memo.

The unidentified driver overcorrected to the left, and then back to the right, when the truck left the roadway, overturning and landing on its top.  Most likely she was drunk, on drugs or fell asleep at the wheel.

Passersby attempted to pull the woman out of the vehicle, but were unable to open the door. Instead, they attached a chain around the door to pull it off, but before they were able to get the person out of the vehicle, it burst into flames, Francis said.

The vehicle was badly damaged due to the blaze. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

A Skagit County sheriff’s deputy was the first law enforcement official on scene, Francis said.
