DRIVER KILLED, PASSENGER INJURED IN ROLLOVER CRASH IN ENCINITAS, CA; HE WAS GOING TOO FAST FOR THE WET ROAD CONDITIONS AND HE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR, STRIKING THE CENTRAL DIVIDER

ENCINITAS, CALIFORNIA

A 29-year-old San Diego man was killed this morning in a rollover crash on rain-slicked Interstate 5 in Encinitas.

The driver of a 2002 Honda Civic and his passenger, a 29-year-old San Diego woman, hydroplaned and lost control while headed north approaching Birmingham Drive at about 6:50 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The Honda struck the center divider at an estimated 70 mph and overturned, Bettencourt said.

The driver was trapped in the car and died at the scene. His name was not immediately available.

The passenger managed to crawl out of the wreckage and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated for minor to moderate injuries, Bettencourt said.

Bettencourt said neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash.  Simply the driver was going too fast for the wet road conditions and he paid with his life for this stupid mistake.  As we always say: it is better to arrive late in your current destination, then to arrive early in your final destination.

The crashed vehicle initially blocked two lanes and a SigAlert was issued.
One lane was later reopened, the CHP said.
