COAST RADIO OFFICES EVACUATED FOLLOWING CHEMICAL SPILL OF CHLORINE GAS AFTER A CAR CRASHED INTO A WATER WELL TOWER THAT HOUSES CHLORINE

MARCH 2, 2015

GULFPORT, MS

It was a scary morning for the COAST RADIO GROUP offices in GULFPORT, MS when a vehicle traveling the highway just outside their offices ran off the road and crashed into the building next door. The building sits at the base of a water tower that houses hazardous chlorine -- used to disinfect the local water supply -- and the accident resulted in a chemical leak.

The crash occurred around 10:40am local time, after which chlorine poured out onto the road and created a cloud of gas that sent several people to the hospital. According to television station WLOX, two major roads in GULFPORT, LORRAINE and SEAWAY had to be closed to traffic.

The COAST RADIO GROUP offices had to be evacuated as well. BILLY SEXAUER, PD for Top 40 WZNF (95.3 GORILLA), told ALL ACCESS,

"The car was doing about 60 when it crashed into the building. Two of our salespeople ran to help get the driver out of the vehicle and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, after being exposed to the chlorine leak. They're being held overnight for observation. Everyone else is okay, and we've finally been allowed back in the building now that the Hazmat team has cleaned the area."
