4 DEAD, 2 INJURED IN FLORIDA HIGHWAY MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH NEAR THE EVERGLADES

MARCH 17, 2015

WESTERN PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA

Four people are dead and 2 were injured after a multi-vehicle accident near US 27 and Willard Smith Road in Western Palm Beach County.

The accident happened approximately 6-7 miles south of South Bay Tuesday morning. There was heavy fog in the area.

First arriving Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews found multiple vehicles with heavy damage and trapped occupants.

Firefighters used extrication tools to free the occupants from the vehicles.

The first collision happened after a trailer became disengaged from a tractor heading southbound on U.S. 27 and sat in the road without lights, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Ford came along and struck the right rear corner and ended on the side of the road and then a pickup truck hit the left rear corner of the trailer, FHP said.

"The second tractor trailer came along and struck the initial vehicle that struck the tractor trailer and pushed it all the way off the roadway into the muck area and there's 4 people pronounced dead in that car at this time," Sgt. Mark Wysocky said.

He said, another passenger in the car was airlifted to Delray Medical Center in serious condition and the driver of the second semi was transported with minor injuries.

Neither the driver of the pickup nor driver of the first semi was hurt.

"We have southbound 27 closed. We've diverted all the traffic to the northbound side so traffic is able to move," Sgt. Wysocky said.
