Fire crews are cleaning near North Cedar Avenue, and
portions of the road are still blocked up from a Jet-A fuel spill this morning.
Lubbock Fire Rescue (LFR) responded to a spill from a tanker
truck at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport early Tuesday morning,
Robert Loveless, a Lubbock Fire Rescue fire marshal, said.
Shortly after midnight, the LFR Hazmat Team went to the
scene where 100 gallons of Jet-A fuel were spilled from a holding truck that
was transferring to a fuel truck, Capt. Nick Wilson of Lubbock Fire Rescue
said.
The fuel flowed out of the containment area to the airport
perimeter, onto North Cedar Avenue, where LFR crews contained the spill before
it reached a lake, a statement from the department said.
Notifications were made to the Texas Commission of
Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency due to the volume
of fuel spilled, the statement from LFR said.
A perimeter of about 40 yards near the fueling station on
North Cedar was blocked off around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, and could be seen
soaking up the jet fuel, the fumes of which could be smelled in the nearby
area.
Texas Commission of Environmental Quality had a couple of
people on site to investigate the incident.
