IS YOUR PROPANE CYLINDER SAFE? COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER SAFETY INFORMATION

  IS YOUR PROPANE CYLINDER SAFE?

COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER SAFETY INFORMATION

On July 1, 2014, a large propane cylinder on a mobile food truck in Philadelphia, PA, ruptured catastrophically. The ensuing fire resulted in two deaths and 11 injuries. In light of this serious incident, PHMSA is taking actions to address the hazards associated with compressed gas cylinders.

Both propane (Class 2.1, Flammable Gas) and the cylinder to which it is stored are regulated by the Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR). Cylinders containing flammable gases are required to fully conform to the packaging, qualification, maintenance, and use requirements of the HMR.

PHMSA's goal is to raise awareness of the safety implications of using poor condition or out-of-test propane cylinders. We encourage users to inspect their cylinders on a regular basis to ensure they are in serviceable condition. Links to resources to assist in inspecting your cylinder can be found on this page.
