ROCKLAND, MAINE

Firefighters rescued a man from the roof of a Hannaford grocery store Saturday morning after he dislocated his knee while attempting to remove snow from the building.

Rockland Assistant Fire Chief Ken Ewell said rescue workers responded to the scene at 10:45 a.m. at 73 Maverick St.

“There was a contracting company that was on the roof removing snow and one of the individuals … twisted the wrong way and dislocated” his knee, he said.
Firefighters used a tower truck — a ladder truck equipped with a bucket — to remove the victim from the roof. He was placed in a stokes basket that was attached to the bucket.

“It was just the safest, most secure way to get him,” said Lt. Jamie Leo. The man was then taken by ambulance to the Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Leo said.

Ewell declined to release the victim’s name and said he did not know the name of the contracting company. Responding units included a firetruck and an ambulance.

Ewell said the victim was “in a lot of pain” and “couldn’t get off the roof by himself.” He was not aware of any other injuries suffered by the victim besides a “dislocated knee.”

The man’s condition was not available Saturday afternoon. Leo said Hannaford remained open during the operation.
