Two volunteer Montgomery County emergency medical services
personnel who were injured while helping at a crash scene on the Beltway are
still in the hospital.
Glen Echo Fire Department EMT Thomas E. Schryver, 26, and
EMT Sydney E. Marshall, 19, were both transported to Suburban Hospital after
they were struck by a car while assisting at a crash scene on I-495 early
Sunday morning. Montgomery County fire officials say they are resting and in
good spirits on Monday morning. They also say that their conditions are
improving and the prognoses for both are good.
At approximately 12:15 a.m., police said officers responded
to the Inner Loop of I-495 at River Road for a report of a crash. The two EMS
personnel had responded to a previous crash and were assisting patients inside
a 2014 Toyota on the right shoulder of the inner loop. Police say Curcho lost
control of his 2005 Ford F-150, skidded across two lanes, hitting the rear of
the Toyota and striking both EMT personnel.
A county ambulance was also on the shoulder of the Inner
Loop with emergency lights activated, police said. Before coming to a rest, the
pickup truck also struck the ambulance. Police say it is ongoing investigation.
It is not known if the patients in the Toyota sustained
additional injuries in the second crash. Police say they were transported to
MedStar Hospital for treatment.
When the crash occurred, the roadway was covered in snow,
police said.
The driver of the striking vehicle was identified as
Maximillano A. Curcho, 34, of Clarksburg, Md. Police say he was also
transported to Suburban Hospital.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is conducting the
ongoing investigation. Nothing has been ruled out at this time as a possible
cause of the crash. No charges have been filed at this time, pending the
outcome of evidence analysis and the crash investigation. Anyone who may have

At just after midnight this
morning, units from (Montgomery County, Maryland) stations 710, 711, and 726
were operating on the inner loop of I-495 just past River Road.
The crew from Ambulance 711 was assessing the occupants sitting in a car along the right shoulder before the primary accident scene. Then, the ambulance crew, the original vehicle , and the ambulance was stuck by a pickup truck. The driver of the striking vehicle was identified as Maximillano A. Curcho, 34, of Clarksburg, Md. Police say he was also transported to Suburban Hospital.

This impact injured two (2) of the four (4) members of Ambulance 711’s crews and entrapped the original occupants sitting in the car.
Additional resources were called and patient care was initiated. The two injured members of Ambulance 711’s crew received serious injuries and were transported to Suburban Hospital trauma center with serious life threatening injuries. The other two crew members where un-injured.
The original three occupants of the car had to be extricated from the vehicle and all three were taken to Medstar trauma center. More to follow-keep them in your prayers.
