A crew from the environmental services company Clean Harbors
worked Saturday to clean up a 450-gallon diesel fuel spill at a Biddeford gas
station.
The spill happened about 1:30 p.m. at the Dead River Shell
Station on Route 1.
The spill occurred because of a malfunction inside a diesel
pump, said Ann Hemenway, an oil and hazardous material responder for the Maine
Department of Environmental Protection.
The spill took place early Saturday afternoon and
contaminated some snow around the pump, Hemenway said. Most of the fuel ran
into a catch basin at the Route 1 station, operated by the Dead River Co.
Hemenway said the snow would be removed and the catch basin
pumped out by the end of the day Saturday. She said the DEP would return Sunday
to assess the extent of contamination in the ground and determine how to deal
with it.
No one was injured in the incident.
