GARFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) —
Branches of the NJ TRANSIT system and the Long Island Rail
Road were shut down in separate incidents Wednesday afternoon, after people
were struck by trains.
In the first incident around 2 p.m., a man was hit by a
Waldwick-bound NJ TRANSIT train near the Garfield station with 100 passengers
onboard, officials told CBS2. There were no injuries in the incident, officials
said.
The man was in an area where the public is not permitted,
officials said.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, service remained suspended
between the Secaucus and Glen Rock stations on the Bergen County Rail Line.
Later in the afternoon, the Port Washington Branch on the
LIRR was completely suspended in both directions after an unauthorized person
was hit by a train at Flushing-Main Street in Queens, officials said.
The condition of the person struck in that incident was not
immediately learned.
The New York City subway system was cross-honoring LIRR
fares on the No. 7 train at Flushing-Main Street and 61st Street-Woodside.

GARFIELD -- A person was struck and killed by an NJ Transit
train on the Bergen County Line Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The victim was hit by a Waldwick-bound train east of
Garfield Station around 2 p.m., according to William Smith, an NJ Transit
spokesman. None of the 100 passengers or crew onboard were hurt, and were
transferred to buses.
Bergen County Line rail service was suspended between
Secaucus and Glen Rock stations, Smith added.
An investigation was ongoing, the spokesman said. The victim
appeared to be an adult male, but was not immediately identified.
Garfield police issued an alert asking motorists to avoid
the Hobart Place-area as police activity continued.
