PIKESVILLE, MARYLAND. (WJZ)

More than a dozen people hospitalized, one in serious condition, after a senior mobility bus and SUV crash into each other at a dangerous intersection in Pikesville, MD.

One of the patients in the overturned bus is now in serious condition, everyone else expected to recover shortly.

A terrifying moment for passengers as their bus flips over at Woodvalley Drive and Stevenson Road.

“I just heard this boom boom boom, and I ran to the window to see what had happened,” Lyn Schapiro said.

A white SUV and senior mobility bus crashing into each other, a sight that is not uncommon for people who live in the area.

“In the last couple of months, we’ve had several accidents at this intersection, with people running the stop signs, so I kind of knew what it was with the sound,” said Schapiro.

Many of the passengers on board the mobility bus were in wheelchairs at the time of the accident. When crews got to the scene, it took them about ten minutes to remove everyone including the driver.

On board this bus were seniors and patients with disabilities; the SUV was carrying two people. A total of 17 people were involved, they were all rushed to the hospital.

“This was the worst with something on the side, but we’ve seen them where it’s been two and three vehicles that have ended up hitting each other, and cars totaled and things like that,” Schapiro said.

“Something needs to be done,” Lyn Shapiro says.

The bus was carrying  14 passengers plus the driver. The intersection was closed for several hours as crews cleaned up the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
