MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – A dramatic one-car crash ended with the vehicle catching fire at a gas station near the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

It took place Sunday night on U.S. 41 in Manatee County.

The Cedar Hammock Fire Department says a female driver – who has not yet been identified – seems to have lost control going southbound on 41 when passing the intersection with 69th Street at a point where the road curves. She drove through a field and would eventually collide with a guard rail against the fuel pumps at the gas station located at 6920 14th Street West.

The car caught fire and leaked oil; fire officials called out a hazmat team, which contained any fuel runoff into the nearby Bowlees Creek.

The fire department says a trauma alert was issued, and the driver was taken to Blake Medical Center. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol also responded to scene, and put yellow tape around the gas station, which was forced to close.

No other injuries were reported.
