DAMAGE AT THE HISTORIC KREBS RESTAURANT: PIPE BURSTS, CEILING COLLAPSES, ROOMS FLOODED

DAMAGE AT THE HISTORIC KREBS RESTAURANT: PIPE BURSTS, CEILING COLLAPSES, ROOMS FLOODED

A frozen pipe that burst caused a ceiling to collapse and some flooding at the newly renovated Krebs restaurant in Skaneateles. (Facebook post from Adam Weitsman)

SKANEATELES, NY -- Sub-zero temperatures early today caused a pipe to burst in the newly renovated and reopened Krebs restaurant, collapsing a ceiling and flooding parts of the building.

There is no word yet on how extensive the damage is, how long repairs will take or when the restaurant will reopen.

But Adam Weitsman, who bought The Krebs in 2010 with his wife, Kim, and reopened it last summer, vowed to make all necessary repairs.

He posted this message on Facebook this morning:
"Feel so bad for my wife Kim this morning. Freezing, brutal weather blew frozen pipe in attic at krebs which in turn flooded whole restaurant when ceilings collapsed from the water weight at 3 am last night. Kim didn't do this project for any financial gain. She does it because she loves it, believes in the chef, the staff and the history of the krebs and also loves the local charities that are benefitting because of the restaurants existence. I try to stay out of it, staying in the shadows and let it be her baby but I'm going to step up As her husband and get this place rebuilt in record time if it's the last @&$?$&@ thing I do."
The Krebs was an historic landmark restaurant on Route 20 in Skaneateles from 1899 to 2010. The Weitsmans did extensive renovations and modernization before reopening in August.
The Weitsmans purchased the property for about $1 million and spent another $3 to $4 million on the renovations. Adam Weitsman is the owner of Upstate Shredding of Owego and other related businesses.
The Weitsmans also send proceeds from the Krebs restaurant to local charities. A check presentation that had been scheduled for today has been postponed.
Those donations include checks for $5,000 each to the American Red Cross, A Room To Heal, Emergency Service Fund for the Homeless in Central New York, and Joseph's House for Women.
The Krebs suffered another setback last month with the unexpected death of its general manager, Daniel Reiser.

SKANEATELES, NY -- The owners of The Krebs restaurant, damaged overnight when a frozen pipe burst and flooded the interior, hope to reopen the historic landmark in two weeks.

Adam Weitsman spent much of the morning on the phone with contractors to hasten the repair effort. Weitsman and his wife Kim bought the then-closed Krebs in 2010, and reopened it last summer after a $3 to $4 million renovation and modernization.
The pipe that burst was in the ceiling above the lounge area, just off the bar, according to a message from Weitsman relayed by one of his employees, Nicole Sterminsky. That caused the ceiling to collapse. The water caused extensive damage to the lounge, named after the Loveless family, who were the previous owners.
Water seeped into the first floor and down to the basement. The major damage is in the lounge, and includes total loss of the furniture there. The pipe burst about 2:30 a.m.
Weitsman is still checking to see whether the damage is covered by insurance.
Since its reopening, The Krebs has been open for dinner Thursdays to Saturdays and for brunch on Sundays.
