CRASH INVOLVING SEMI, ICE SHACK BRIEFLY CLOSES US HIGHWAY 12 IN SOUTH DAKOTA

CRASH INVOLVING SEMI, ICE SHACK BRIEFLY CLOSES US HIGHWAY 12 IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Snowy roads may have contributed to a semi truck colliding with an ice shack on U.S. Highway 12 near the intersection of 379th Avenue on Monday afternoon shortly after 4 p.m., according to authorities from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Capt. Rob Weinmeister, with the highway patrol, said it appeared a westbound pickup pulling the shack lost control, with the eastbound semi then sideswiping the ice shack, which caused the semi to go into the south ditch.

Weinmeister said a full investigation was ongoing.

The driver of the semi was transported by Aberdeen Fire and Rescue to Avera St. Luke’s with injuries; however, the driver’s name and injury status were unavailable. A second ambulance was later called to the scene at around 5:15 p.m. to check on the driver of the pickup.

Westbound traffic was rerouted north on 379th Avenue at the accident scene west of Aberdeen. Authorities reopened the highway roughly 21/2 hours after the accident.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Aberdeen Fire and Rescue and the South Dakota Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
