GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) - Authorities say a 58-year-old
Grand Island man has died after his car rammed into the back of a garbage
truck.
Grand Island police say the accident happened around
6:15 a.m. Monday on West Highway 30. Police
say Leo Mostek was driving east when his car struck the back of an eastbound
truck that was waiting to turn left. Mostek, of Grand Island, was declared dead
at the scene.
The truck driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of back
pain.

A Monday morning traffic accident on West Highway 30
resulted in the death of a Grand Island man.
According to the Grand Island Police Department accident
report, 58-year-old Leo Mostek drove his eastbound 2004 Honda Accord into the
back of an eastbound 1997 Volvo trash truck owned by Heartland Disposal.
The trash truck, which was being driven by Ronald Kula
of Central City, was stopped in the traffic lane waiting to turn left into the
driveway of Casey’s General Store at 4150 W. Highway 30. The accident occurred
at 6:13 a.m.
The accident report said Mostek was not wearing a seat
belt, although the Honda’s air bags did deploy. He was extracted from the
vehicle by the Grand Island Fire Department, which responded to the scene along
with the Grand Island Police Department.
Mostek was declared dead at the scene of the accident.
The accident report said that, for unknown reasons,
Mostek’s Honda drove directly into the back of the stopped trash truck for at
what appeared to be the posted highway speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
There was nothing noted to show the driver was
distracted. There also did not appear to be any skid marks that would have
showed that Mostek’s Honda attempted to slow down or stop before hitting the back
of the trash truck.
Kula, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to
CHI Health St. Francis with back pain.
The Police Department said the accident remains under
investigation.
