A 65-year-old man was critically injured after the driver of a crane truck ran a red light and hit a Toyota in Chandler.

A Chandler wreck between a crane truck and a sedan left a 65-year-old man in critical condition and his wife with non-life-threatening injuries on Thursday morning, according to a police spokesman.

The collision at Alma School Road and Fulton Ranch Boulevard forced investigators to close the intersection until about 11 a.m. Thursday, said Sgt. Joe Favazzo, a Chandler police spokesman.

The crane truck was traveling northbound on Alma School Road at about 9 a.m. Thursday when the 47-year-old driver ran a red light, Favazzo said. The truck collided with the driver's-side door of a Toyota Camry that the 65-year-old man was driving, he said.
Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the car and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Favazzo said.

The man's wife was also injured, he said.

The wreck is under investigation, Favazzo said, but impairment and distraction did not appear to be immediate factors that contributed to the driver running the red light.
