BURST WATER PIPE TRIGGERED AN ALARM AT CONNECTICUT SCHOOL AND PROMPTED EVACUATION

A South Windsor school was evacuated because of a broken water pipe.

SOUTH WINDSOR — A magnet school was briefly evacuated Thursday when a broken water pipe triggered an alarm.

No one was injured, and students were back in the CREC International Magnet School for Global Citizenship, 625 Chapel Road, within 20 minutes, a spokeswoman said.

The leak happened about 11 a.m. in the main office and conference room, said Aura Alverado, director of communications for the Capitol Region Education Council. Buses were sent to the school so the children wouldn't have to stand out in the cold, she said.
School staff initially suspected a gas leak because of the smell of stagnant water, she said. The cold weather caused the pipe to break, she said.

The school is for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5.
