COOPERTOWN, TN (WSMV) -

A tanker-truck hauling 48,000 gallons of sulfuric acid overturned on Interstate 24 East in Robertson County around 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the 2003 Mack tractor driven by 67-year-old Calvin L. Morgan of Turtletown, TN, was traveling eastbound on I-24 near mile marker 23 when the vehicle's left front tire left the roadway into the median.

The driver overcorrected and lost control. The trailer then separated and came to rest within the median. The tractor crossed over both lanes and crashed into several trees along the right shoulder.

Hazmat crews are on the scene. Some of the acid may have leaked into a drainage ditch in the median.

Morgan was injured but refused transport to a hospital.

He faces a citation for an expired medical card. Other charges are pending.

The right lane of I-24 East between Maxey Road (exit 19) and State Route 49 (exit 24) is now open, but traffic is still moving slowly. The roadway is not expected to be completely cleared until 10 p.m.
