SHIFTING CARGO DURING EVASIVE OR TURN MANEUVER IS A TYPICAL CAUSE OF SEMI-TRAILER, OR TANKER TRUCK OVERTURN

SHIFTING CARGO DURING EVASIVE OR TURN MANEUVER IS A TYPICAL CAUSE OF SEMI-TRAILER, OR TANKER TRUCK OVERTURN

It is known for many years that truck accidents have a considerable societal impact due to the fatalities, injuries, hospitalizations, emergency department visits and property damage that they cause.  The NTSB reported last week that the annual average single-unit truck crash burden is almost 2,000 dead each year, 2,500 seriously injured, 6,000 hospitalizations, and 60,000 emergency department visits.  To that number we have to add the deaths and injuries caused by the tanker trucks, semi-trucks and trailer truck damages.  The numbers are astronomical.  If we add to that cost the cost of environmental damage, such as petroleum fuel consumption, spills, water contamination, air emissions, etc., it is becoming clearer that the trucks are the main culprit for the environmental and societal damages.  We have to make our roads safer and find different ways of safely moving products across the nation.  But our investment in the public transportation infrastructure is significantly lagging.  We need trillions of dollars to improve our roadways and transportation infrastructure and to improve the safety aspects of the trucking industry.

Here are some truck rollover accidents that happened the last fews days.  It is shocking to see the number of deaths and injuries and property damage caused by trucks every day.

MIDDLETOWN, OHIO
UPDATE @ 9:15 p.m.: The driver of a minivan in one of the middle lanes of I-75 North was attempting to exit the interstate when it hit a semitrailer in the right lane, and that’s what led to the shutdown of all three northbound lanes for approximately two hours and 45 minutes.
Sgt. Brian Bost, Ohio Highway Patrol Post at Hamilton, said the driver of the big rig tried an evasive maneuver when his cargo of beer shifted. That caused the cab and trailer to fall onto its right side, ripping open the trailer and causing beer and glass to crash and spill all over the road.
Sandy’s Towing and Recovery was called to clear the road. ODOT crews were called to spread salt in an effort to prevent slippery conditions that would be created by frozen, wasted Miller High Life.
Bost said the driver of the semitrailer suffered non-life threatening injuries, but was taken to Atrium Medical Center for precautionary reasons.
Bost said the driver of the minivan was not injured, but was cited for improper lane change.
