Nov. 29--LEA COUNTY -- An explosion at an oil field tank
battery on the Lea/Eddy county line reportedly left two workers injured
Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency service responders from both Lea and Eddy counties,
as well as from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, were at the scene of the
explosion, which occurred near County Road 243 and County Road 126.
According to emergency scanner traffic, two people were
injured, but the severity of their injuries is still unknown.
The two injured workers were airlifted out of the location. It
is believed they were being flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock,
Texas for treatment.
The Lea County Sheriff's Office took control of the scene,
while the Eddy County Sheriff's Department assisted with limiting access to the
rural road that led to the explosion site.
The source of the explosion is believed to have been caused by
a tank battery fire, according to an Eddy County official.
Black smoke could be seen billowing from the location while
driving down the Hobbs Highway.
Emergency crews directly sprayed the tank battery with water
and were able to contain the fire at the site with their three tankers.
It is still unknown who the injured people were, or which
company employed them, and it is still unknown which company operates the site
of the explosion.
A Devon Energy official who was at the scene said that a sign
would be up near the access road indicating which company owned the tank
battery, but there was no sign visible on the access road.

CARLSBAD — An explosion at an oilfield tank battery in
southeastern New Mexico has injured two workers.
The Carlsbad
Current Argus reported that the two workers were transported to an
area hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known, but
early reports stated one person was burned and another may have broken a leg.
Crews were able to contain the fire at the site, which is near
the border between Lea and Eddy counties.
Sheriff’s deputies secured the area Wednesday afternoon and
were limiting access to the rural road that leads to the site.
Authorities say the cause of the explosion is unknown.

(Loco Hills, NM) According to Eddy County Sheriff Scott London,
deputies responded to a Apache Oil oil-well on County Road 222 near Loco Hills
this morning in reference to an oil-well blow out/explosion.
Oilfield workers were conducting maintenance on the well, when
a seal failed. A pipe was released down the well and created back pressure of
air and crude oil. When the pressure was released it returned with a high
pressure rate. Four workers were injured, one of which was flown to Lubbock,
Texas for treatment. Others were treated locally.
