18-wheeler strikes disabled vehicle on I-20, then bursts into flames

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. -
An accident involving a tractor trailer tied up traffic along eastbound I-20 near the Belair Road exit Wednesday morning.

Shortly after 6am, a call came in about the accident. According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the 18-wheeler was traveling east on I-20 when the driver reportedly feel asleep. The truck then went off the shoulder of the road and stuck a Dodge Avenger vehicle that was sitting on the side of the interstate. After striking the vehicle, the 18-wheeler then went back across both lanes and came to a rest against the median, where it burst into flames. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, but the truck was completely destroyed.

As of the time of this article, I-20 Eastbound has re-opened and traffic has resumed.

COLUMBIA CO., Georgia (WRDW)--I-20 Eastbound at the Belair Road exit in Columbia County is shut down as crews work an accident involving a tractor trailer and a car.


The tractor trailer is on fire, but no one was inside the car and no one was hurt, according to a Columbia County dispatch supervisor. The accident happened at 6:15 a.m.
