One driver critically injured in Work County vehicle crash

SYLVESTER — Two drivers were injured in a traffic accident Saturday in Worth County, one of them critically, officials say.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Anthony Landrum was traveling north on State Highway 33 just north of Calhoun Road in Worth County when the 2008 Ford pickup truck he was driving was involved in a collision with a tractor trailer truck in the south lane driven by Kenneth Tyner, 53.

Trooper Robert Corbin with GSP Post 40 said the accident occurred around 10 a.m. when Landrum failed to maintain his lane and allowed his vehicle to cross the center line into the southbound lane.

The impact of the collision caused the tractor trailer to “jackknife,” Corbin said, and end up the woods off the west shoulder of the highway, while the pickup truck left the highway off the east shoulder.

Following the accident, Landrum was airlifted to Macon Medical Center in critical condition, Corbin said, while Tyner was treated for a broken knee at Phoebe Worth Hospital in Sylvester.

Traffic was blocked on Highway 33 until about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Corbin said, when the northbound lane was reopened to traffic. Hazmat personnel and workers with the Georgia Department of Transportation were continuing to remove debris, sand and up to about 250 gallons of diesel fuel from the roadway late Saturday afternoon, Corbin said.

The incident continues under investigation by the GSP and charges are pending against Landrum, Corbin said
