CONWAY, NH – A husband and wife from New Bedford, Mass., were killed Monday when their motorcycle was hit by a pickup truck, police said.

Lt. Chris Mattei confirmed Wednesday that David and Cathy Oliveira, both 57, died when their Harley Davidson was hit by a westbound Silverado pickup driven by Jackson Eugene Hammond, 84, of Palm Bay, Fla.

The Oliveiras were trying to turn from East Conway Road onto Eastman Road about 11:50 a.m. when the crash occurred, Mattei said. Hammond was uninjured.

Mattei said neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.

Cathy Oliveira was a teacher in New Bedford for more than 15 years, while her husband was a manager at a home-improvement store, according to New Bedford-area news reports.

Kelly Anne Braga Silva, a niece of the Oliveiras, started a fundraising campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/oliveira-family.

“This past weekend our Family was struck with Devastating, Tragic News of the passing of two Amazing and Loving People. They were killed in a motorcycle accident while on a weekend getaway. These two Amazing people have in some way or other touched or changed lives of Many,” wrote Braga Silva. “It is with a extremely heavy heart that I ask all of you to come together and help their 3 living children, Ashley Oliveira, Brittany Oliveira and Justin Oliveira, with expenses that were unexpected. I am lost for words when I think about them both walking into the gates of heaven together.”

As of Wednesday morning, the campaign had raised $9,315 of its goal of $10,000.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the accident to call them at 356-5715.

At 11:49am on Monday, the Conway New Hampshire Police Department responded to an accident involving a motorcycle with two passengers and a pickup truck.

The driver of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle, 57-year old David Oliviera and his 57-year old wife Cathy, both New Bedford residents, were making a left-hand turn when it collided with a Chevy Silverado 2500 pickup truck operated by a single occupant. Both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were pronounced dead at the scene.

Cathy Oliveira was a teacher within the New Bedford Public School system. Conway Police said that neither alcohol nor speed appears to be a factor. Local residents complained that the intersection has been a dangerous one for years and that a light system was in need at the intersection as it is difficult to see motorcyclists coming down the road.

The Conway Police Department asks that anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact the department at 603-356-5715.
