STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --

A horrific scene unfolded at a Westerleigh construction site Friday morning, when a worker operating a saw apparently slipped and fatally sliced his throat, police said.

The male, in his 50s, was working at a roadwork site on Maine and Clinton B. Fiske Avenues.

He was using the saw to cut a pipe when he apparently slipped and cut his hand and throat, according to preliminary information provided by an NYPD spokesman.

Emergency personnel responded at 11:26 a.m., and rushed him to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.

Emergency radio communications indicated that police blocked off major intersections to facilitate the transport.

The male was pronounced deceased on arrival, the NYPD spokesman said.

Further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately available.

The worker's identity has not yet been released.

Residents on the blocked confirmed a large number of emergency vehicles were at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation and roadwork has been stopped.

The medical examiner will formally determine the cause of death.

Further information will be posted when it is made available.
