Worker dies after falling 30 feet from tree

MEDWAY, Mass. —

An Athol resident died in Medway on Monday after apparently falling from a tree, the Milford Daily News reported.

Lewis P. Umbenhower III, 38, died as a result of his injuries at Milford Regional Medical Center, according to a statement released by the town.

The Medway Police and Fire Communications Center received a 911 emergency call stating a man at 27 Broken Tree Road fell approximately 30 feet out of a tree, according to the statement.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Umbenhower was cutting a portion of a tree when he fell.

Emergency medical aid was administered by first responders from Medway and he was transported to the medical center by Medway Fire & Hopedale Fire Paramedics.

The incident is under investigation by members of the Medway Police Department assisted by the CPAC unit out of the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office and investigators from Occupational Safety & Health Administration.

Umbenhower's mother told WCVB he was an independent contractor who'd been working for various companies as an arborist for 20 years. He leaves behind his family, including two sisters, and his dog.

MEDWAY, Mass. -


A man hired to do tree work in Medway died after a fall on Monday.

The man, identified as 38-year-old Athol native Lewis Umbenhower, worked for a business called On A Limb Tree Service in Medway.

"There was an emergency call made, and Medway Fire and Police went to a resident's home in Medway," a town spokesperson said. "There was a man on the ground.

Umbenhower fell from a tree Monday afternoon at a home located at 27 Broken Tree Road, and later succumbed to his injuries.

"He was just cutting down a branch, and fell about 30 feet," Town of Medway Director of Communications Sandy Johnston said.

The homeowners spoke to Boston 25 News, saying they were shocked by the news and that they had seen the crew of three men before they left for work.

They say the businesses came highly recommended by neighbors.

Cameras show the tree that was being taken down, with a harness on the ground close by.

Paramedics performed CPR on Umbenhower before he was rushed to Milford Regional Center, where he then died.
