Republic Services employee dies at Bettendorf facility

A 40-year-old Bettendorf man employed at Republic Services, Bettendorf, was killed Monday evening in a work-related accident, according to a news release from Bettendorf police.



The accident, which happened about 5:16 p.m., involved a mechanic working on the hydraulics of a sanitation truck at the facility at 6449 Valley Drive, according to the release.

Bettendorf police and Medic EMS responded to the facility. Responders tried life-saving measures but the employee died at the scene from his injuries.

The man's name has not been released pending notification of his family and friends.

"It is with great sadness for the entire Republic Services family that we learned last night that one of our employees did not make it home safely to his family," Ray Carter, general manager at the Bettendorf facility, said in a statement.

"We are mourning the loss of our good friend and dedicated co-worker, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones."

He added that Republic is fully cooperating with the Bettendorf Police Department.

According to the Republic Services website, the company is an industry leader in U.S. recycling and non-hazardous solid waste. Through its collection companies, transfer stations, recycling centers and landfills, Republic focuses on providing environmental services and solutions for commercial, industrial, municipal, residential and oilfield customers.

A 40-year-old Bettendorf man died in an industrial accident involving a sanitation truck on Monday at Republic Services.

According to the City of Bettendorf, the Bettendorf Fire Department, the Bettendorf Police Department, and Medic EMS responded to Republic Services at 6449 Valley Drive at 5:16 p.m.for an industrial accident involving a mechanic working on the hydraulics of a sanitation truck.

Upon arrival, life saving measures were attempted, however the victim died at the scene due to the injuries he sustained. The victim was an employee of Republic Services.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time pending notifications to the family members and close friends.

Iowa OSHA Administrator Jens Nissen confirmed to Local 4 News that there was a fatality at Republic Services in Bettendorf on Monday.

He said OSHA was aware of the situation and an investigation has been initiated, but could provide no other details at this time.

Bettendorf Police and paramedics responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. Monday evening at Republic Services.

Crews stayed at the scene for over an hour, going in and out of a garage holding some of the garbage trucks on site.

No word yet on what exactly happened or if anyone was injured.
