MORE DRUNK DRIVERS BITE THE DUST: Wrong-way drunk driver Omar Madera-Meza, 28, of Reno killed when his black 2003 Cadillac CTS struck a semi truck head-on in the early morning Thursday, July 6

SPARKS, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — The driver killed in a head-on crash last week on Interstate 80 near Pyramid Way has been identified as a 28-year-old Reno man, according to Nevada Highway Patrol.

The driver of a black 2003 Cadillac CTS was killed when his sedan struck a semi truck head-on in the early morning Thursday, July 6, NHP reported.

The driver has been identified as Omar Madera-Meza of Reno. NHP said in a statement Monday that the preliminary investigation indicates his sedan got onto the interstate from the eastbound off-ramp.

The Cadillac was driving west on the eastbound side of I-80 when it collided with the semi truck, which was pulling two tanker trailers.

Troopers say Madera-Meza was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the semi sustained only minor injuries and was treated on scene.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Trooper Doug Hildebrand, with the Multi-disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team, at 775-687-9617 or dhildebrand@dps.state.nv.us, regarding case #17070000498.

SPARKS, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — One person is dead after driving the wrong way on I-80 near Pyramid Way in Sparks, according to NHP.

According to Sgt. Farmer, at about 1:10 a.m. on Thursday a passenger car got on the freeway on the eastbound on-ramp, but somehow ended up driving the wrong way in the westbound direction.

The car went roughly 100 yards before colliding with a semi-truck, according to police.

The driver of the semi-truck did not sustain any injuries. The wrong-way driver died on the scene.

NHP does believe that drugs and alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Most drunk or drug-related accidents occur in the early a.m. hours, like this one.  There is a reason the state troopers watch for drunk drivers during these a.m. hours.
