Officials say 21 people were taken to hospitals after a bus carrying tobacco workers collided head-on with a pickup truck Tuesday morning on Mountain Road.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. near Sunrise Park, Fire Chief Chuck Flynn said. The bus was heading westbound when police believe it lost control.

Ambulances from around the area were called in to help take victims to five area hospitals, including St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Hartford Hospital.

In total, 20 people were transported from the bus and one person was transported from the pickup truck, Flynn said. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, he said.

Flynn said everyone was able to get out of the truck and the bus on their own. A small fire broke out in the bus, but a police officer quickly extinguished it. Firefighters were able to contain fuel that spilled from the bus, Flynn said.
