1 pickup truck driver killed after he crossed the double yellow line and collided head-on with another pickup truck in Daytona Beach, FL

DAYTONA BEACH, FL — A head-on crash Wednesday morning on Tomoka Farms Road left one driver dead and another injured, an official said.

Two pickups were driving in opposite directions on Tomoka Farms in front of the Carmax when the truck traveling south swerved across the double yellow line into the northbound lane, crashing head-on into the other truck, said Daytona Beach Fire Department spokesperson Sasha Staton.

Lyda Longa, a Daytona Beach police spokeswoman, said the at-fault driver’s vehicle burst into flames, which caused fire damage to the second vehicle, too.

Fire crews were dispatched at 6:22 a.m. and by the time they arrived, the truck was engulfed in flames, Staton said.

“The driver of the northbound lane was able to exit his truck on his own,” she said.

Longa said the driver of the at-fault vehicle appeared to have been trapped under the dashboard because of the damage caused by the impact.

“As a result, the driver of the at-fault vehicle was severely burned and could not be identified,” Longa said.

The northbound driver, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment, according to police. That driver’s identity was not released by police. The medical examiner’s office also took custody of the body at the scene.

The State Fire Marshal has been called to investigate, Staton said.
