Sixth Street Altoona, PA Fire Rules as Arson; Firefighters Injured

7 FIREFIGHTERS HURT IN PA FLOOR COLLAPSES AT FIRE

September 1, 2016

Investigators said that seven firefighters were injured as a result.

Fire Inspector Tim Hughes was one of the seven firefighters hurt.

“I was getting some photos the day after the fire, and some of the drop down was covering the holes as I was walking through, and I hit the hole and just fell through the floor,” said Tim Hughes, Altoona fire inspector.

Five firefighters fell through the floors. Investigators said that the fire started in the cellar, eating away at the floors above.

“Due to the high heat of the fire that started in the basement, it did burn out spots throughout the floor,” said Hughes.

Another firefighter received a shoulder injury, and the seventh firefighter suffered burns. All have been treated and released, although one is still nursing a fractured ankle.

“It could have been a lot worse. It could have resulted in a firefighter fatality,” said Hughes.

He said the investigation revealed that this fire was intentionally set. The case has been turned over to Altoona Police, who are actively searching to uncover who is responsible. Hughes said that whoever is responsible could face more than just arson charges, they could also face charges relating to the firefighters’ injuries.
