A man was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries after an accident and vehicle fire on Interstate 84 east Thursday afternoon.

Drivers eperienced heavy delays on I-84 in Southington going eastbound following the fiery crash.

At around 12:30 p.m., one person was seriously injured after their car crashed on I-84 east near exit 28, just over the Cheshire line.

The driver crashed into a reflective post then an overhead illumination pole and continued to travel straight in the grass shoulder before hitting the metal beam guardrail, launching the car into the concrete bridge support column, police said.

The victim was unconscious but breathing before he was transported to St. Mary's Hospital. The extent of their injuries is unclear.

Most likely the driver was drunk or suffered some medical emergency or fell asleep.
