LOGAN COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) -- Two children traveling in a van driven by a Chicago man were killed in a multi-vehicle accident on I-55 in downstate Logan County Sunday afternoon, Illinois State Police said.

A white truck hit a silver Honda van driven by a 40-year-old Chicago man at approximately 3:02 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-55 at mile post 138 just north of Lincoln, Ill., according to police. The Honda van then hit another four vehicles.

Two children traveling in the van were pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released their identities.

Another child is in critical condition and had to be airlifted from the scene to a hospital. One other person was also airlifted to a hospital.

The truck was driven by a 24-year-old man from Purcell, Mo. Five of the vehicles had extensive damage and one was able to drive away from the scene. The northbound lanes of I-55 were closed for several hours while police investigated.
