JENNER, Calif. (KGO) -- Sonoma County officials have confirmed three people have died after a vehicle went underwater in the Russian River in Jenner.

The incident on state Highway 1 was reported around 8:25 a.m., according to REDCOM, the Sonoma County Fire and Emergency Services dispatch center.


Highway 1 at the Jenner Beach trail was closed in both directions at 9:18 a.m.

At least two people were killed and Highway 1 was closed Tuesday morning in Jenner when a truck crashed and plunged into the Russian River, officials said.


The crash was reported about 8:30 a.m., but by the time California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene of the Sonoma County town, the two in the truck were dead, with one floating in the water and another still in the cab of the vehicle, according to the CHP.

A Sig-alert was issued for the area, with all lanes of the highway closed.

By 9:30 a.m., officers were waiting for a tow truck to excavate the submerged vehicle and divers to recover the bodies.

Jenner is a small coastal town located in Sonoma County near the mouth of the Russian River. It's about an hour and 45 minutes north of San Francisco.
