LAWRENCE, Mass. —Two people died from injuries sustained when a car drove off an embankment and rolled over on Interstate 495.

State police said they responded to the I-495 southbound off ramp to Marston Street in Lawrence at 2:17 a.m. A preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a Honda Civic entered Marston Street offramp at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate the curve, causing the car to drive off the embankment and roll over.

The driver, identified as a 22-year-old man from Lawrence, sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to Lawrence General Hospital, but was transferred to Beth Israel Hospital.

The two passengers, identified as Alexander Castro, 23, of Salem, and Wilbert Munoz, 26, of Lawrence, suffered fatal injuries. Police said Munoz was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Castro was pronounced dead at Lawrence General Hospital.

The Marston Street offramp was closed for nearly four hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed against the driver at this time.
