Crane operator at factory killed in accident in Venice

VENICE, ILLINOIS:  A worker at a steel-fabricating plant was crushed to death Friday morning in an industrial accident.

Kevin J. Slaton, 56, of Granite City, died at Custom Steel Processing Inc. at 1001 College Street. Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn said Slaton suffered head injuries when trapped between two rolls of coiled steel.

The accident was reported to authorities shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday, and Slaton was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later.


Venice police said he was operating a ceiling-mounted crane when the coils fell. Police said he was a long-time employee at the plant.

A spokesman for Custom Steel declined comment. The plant's website says it makes custom-ordered products from rolled steel.

Nonn said the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was investigating.

A worker at the Custom Steel Processing Plant in Venice, Ill. was killed on the job Friday morning.

According to police, 56-year-old Kevin Slaton was moving two spools of steel around 7:30 when he was trapped between them. He died on the scene.

Between 20 and 30 employees were sent home.

An autopsy determined his cause of death was craniocerebral blunt head trauma.

OSHA is handling an investigation.
