JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — One person is dead, according to Virginia State Police, after a fiery single-vehicle accident on Interstate 64 West in James City County Tuesday evening.

10 On Your Side viewer Traci Powers sent in video that shows a car off the side of the interstate engulfed in flames. Several people can be seen in the video trying to help before firefighters arrived on scene.

“A car fire like that, you are putting yourself in danger with the car exploding, and those people ran right to it to try and help the person,” said Powers.

Troopers say the crash happened at 3:52 p.m. at mile marker 331, near Croaker.

Powers say the car ignited after slamming into a tree.

The westbound lanes of I-64 were closed until 8:15 p.m., when troopers reopened all lanes.

Powers says while someone lost their life, it was emotional to see strangers working together to help someone in need.

“To see just everybody coming together, no rhetoric, no political agendas. It was a stranger, they needed help and everybody that stopped, helped,” said Powers. “That was important for me to document.”

Virginia State Police say they are still investigating. A spokeswoman says it’s possible there could have been more than one victim inside the vehicle.
