Container ship ARIES is suffering engine trouble in Med since July 16, en route from Damietta Egypt to Fos France. Vessel crossed Med at a reduced speed and was disabled on July 25 in a strait between southwest Crete island and Liviko Pelagos island. According to AIS track, vessel is slowly drifting towards Crete southwest coast.

The container ship Aries lost propulsion power after engine failure in Mediterranean Sea on several nautical miles off Crete island, Greece. The ship was en route from Damietta, Egypt to Fos, France and suffered engine problems several hours after leaving the African port, but resumed voyage with reduced speed. 

However, near the Crete Island the container ship’s engine MaK 8M32 with power 3520 kW totally broke down and vessel lost propulsion power. The engineers are trying to restart the engine and to repair the problem, but currently without any success. According to AIS the ship is still drifting towards Crete southwest coast.


The local authorities were informed about the accident, but captain of container ship Aries still did not requested assistance and trying to solve the problem with engine by own means. The local authorities are ready to send a towing tug in case of emergency or problems for seaworthiness of the ship.

The container ship Aries (IMO: 9123518) has overall length of 110.40 m, moulded beam of 15.90 m, depth of 8.00 m and maximum draft of 6.10 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 5,966 DWT and the gross tonnage is 4,099 GRT. The container carrier was built in 1966 by Scheepswerf Pattje in Hoogezand under yard number 391. The owner and operator of the ship is Ukrainian company Marco Shipping.
