 A construction worker fell 20 feet into a manhole Wednesday morning, and Phoenix Fire Department rescue units worked for more than an hour to extract him, fire officials said.

The man, 31, was conscious and had suffered minor injuries after the fall at Third Avenue and Indian School Road, according to Capt. Reda Bigler, Phoenix Fire Department spokeswoman. He was complaining of back pain but was in stable condition, she said.

The man was transported to a hospital for treatment.
