July 4, 2016

A firefighter is recovering after suffering from exhaustion and smoke inhalation while battling a house fire early Monday morning, according to Pierce County Fire District 13.

Just after 1 a.m., smoke alarms went off at a home near Hyada Blvd Northeast and La Hal Da Avenue NE in Browns Point. The family made it out of the home, but the flames ripped through the garage and upstairs.

Pierce County Fire District 13 said the injured firefighter was one of the first on scene. Spokesperson Jim Zuluaga said the firefighter should be alright.

Fire investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fire which likely started in the garage. Several vehicles were destroyed including an electric car. Zuluaga said the Tesla electric car caught fire and made it tough to put out the flames.

In total, firefighters estimate the damage to be $750,000.
