HUMBLE, Texas – Flames shot through the roof of an apartment building as a 4-alarm fire destroyed 24 homes.

“All my stuff is gone,” Shannon Williams said, who lost her belongings in the fire. “Everything I own. Even my car. I don’t know what to do.”

The fire burned through a building at the Deerbrook Forest Apartments off the Eastex Freeway and Rankin.

Fire investigators are working to determine what started the blaze.

“By the time we got here, it was pretty well involved,” said Humble Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Legoudes. “We had fire going all the way up through the third-floor roof. It spread pretty rapidly.”

Apartment managers said they’re trying to place the people affected in new units or at other nearby properties.

But that hasn’t softened the blow for families.

There is good news, though.

Despite the fast-moving flames, no one was hurt—thanks, in part, to neighbors who helped dozens of people get out.“Running up starting at the top, hitting every door, because I know there are neighbors who work overnight,” said DeShaun Jackson. “I wanted to make sure material loss is one thing, but we didn’t lose any lives.
